World Building with our Altars*

*sacred spaces, inspiration stations, zen dens, nurture nooks…whatever you want to call it.

If you want to inject a little more magic, intention, support, visual beauty and spirituality into your life then an altar is a really beautiful way to signal to yourself that you are deserving of a space that is just your own. Interacting with an altar is an opportunity to create an external representation of a more aligned world for yourself. It represents who you are, who you were, who you are walking towards, who you are honouring and who you are shapeshifting into. They are great for reclaiming a spiritual practice or for showing your intention to be more present to the magic of your life. They can be created in infinite ways and can grow and evolve with you. Below are some ways you can engage with your own altar building or evolving in a practical, magical, real-life way. The only rules really are that they should be by you and for you.

Members: I have shared more info about my own altar and a wee Tarot spread for you to use to connect more with your own. You can find it in the members area. Don’t forget more info like this can be found in the Get Spiritual With Me (GSWM) section of the membership area.

Altar Ideas

I’ve attached this handy visual to help those of you not too sure or feeling overwhelmed by where to start.

Some things to consider…

Location:

Consider where in your home or work space you’d like it to live. It can be a wall display with shelves, on top of a shelving unit, on the floor, in a corner or a piece of art. It can be a whole room, in your office, your bathroom, your bedroom, your shed, your attic. There are some suggestions in a variety of practices and traditions around where an altar ‘should ‘ be but let’s be honest, it has to work for us. It’s worth having a little search to see if there are some ideas for you if you are connected to certain cultural practices otherwise trust yourself to find the right space and place.

The Connections and Contents:

What you place on, above and around your altar should be deeply personal to who you are, where you come from, who you are honouring and what you are building for yourself. You can have photos or items representing little you, current you and future you. You can honour your ancestors, your culture, your deities, your loved ones, your well council, nature, the planets, the cycles and seasons of the year. You can honour the elements, astrological connections, seasonal foods, Tarot symbolism and imagery, art, music, sex and pleasure. You can place items that represent your goals and dreams, wants and needs, healing things and homecoming paths. You can also place items that you find to be beautiful because we all need more beauty and joy in our lives. Consider the world you want to build for yourself and for others and place things that represent that for you at this time. This is an allowed to grow and change with you.

Engagement:
Engaging with your altar regularly (however that looks for you) is key. Showing up to your altar and all the beautiful, meaningful, powerful things you’ve place there is showing up for yourself and the homecomings paths you are walking and the world you are building. Keeping it clean and tidy as well as updated and nourished is important too. Offerings like water, incense, candle light, nature and found items, poetry, food, plants, drawings, art, perfume, etc are all ways to show respect to you and your connections. Dropping in and communicating with the connections of your altar is also important. Drop in and connect with all your selves (past, present and future) and the connections you are honouring (spiritual, ancestral, familial). Meditate or visualise with them. Ask for support and give gratitude. Do this however it feels best and right for you. Have a chat and a conversation. It’s all good.

Tarot Links:

This is huge Magician energy my friends. This is like building a spiritual workshop so you can connect to and channel your creativity, intuitive connections, support systems and wisdom. Being inspired by the Homecomings of the Magician can be really supportive here. These Themes and Prompts are from the Major Arcana section of my Membership Area.

Magician Themes: Being inspired, inspired action, connected to our creative source, creating, making, sharing, focus, fruitful endeavours, possibility and potential, aligned channeling, healing rituals, supported resources and spiritual toolbox, practical magic.

This is my own creation for my own deck (and book) I’m creating and the first time I’ve shared it outside of my trusted circle :)

Magician’s Knowing: I am worthy of my connection to something more and I foster a relationship with this connection. I am ready to create something and share this creation. Something is ready to make my own brand of magic with me. I can create within my Magician’s workshop.

Homecoming Considerations:
What wants to move through me?
What am I being called to create in my life?
What does being creative mean to me (ideas, pings, ah ha’s, words, art, joyful sparks, partnerships, habits, new ways of doing something)?
When do I feel most creative?
Am I being invited to pause and assess what may be blocking me from moving forward?
Do I feel disconnected from my creative source?
Am I giving this opportunity for connection enough time and space?
What might I need to strengthen this?

Here is a wee peek at my own ever growing and changing altar. I’ve shared more about mine (along with a wee Altar Tarot spread over in the Members’ Only Blog).

If you can think of anyone who might like this space and/or benefit from being here with us, feel free to share this post with them.
