Fighting the Good Fight for my Highly Sensitive, Empathic, Chronically Ill or Limited Capacity Folks
We had an interesting convo happening over on the Insta last week where I shared some of the things I’m doing to contribute to a more fair world that is within my capacity and skill set. It led to some good sharing from many in the community as well and I wanted to cultivate a wee list for us here to check in with when things feel super heavy and we feel like we aren’t doing enough.
THIS IS NOT A TO-DO list to make you feel overwhelmed. We don’t need to feel more overwhelmed. We want to just feel whelmed for once. The intention of this list is for many of you to feel relieved or affirmed in what you are doing and maybe to provide a few more ideas for those of us to explore when and if we have the capacity for it.
If you want to add to the convo, please put your wonderful things in the comments sections below.
Some of the ways I have shown up for a more fair and just world are:
Learning about people from the people themselves and approaching my learning in a calm and forward thinking way rather than from a place of fear, anger or defensiveness
Keeping myself updated from more positive promoting, solution focussed and fact based news sources
Changing my website provider. This had a pretty big money, time and energy cost but one that hugely aligned with my values and the values of this business so it was important for me to do.
Started buying second hand clothes for myself and my son (almost exclusively). Big fan of the Vinted.
Clearing out, selling and donating unnecessary items from an mindset of what’s enough
Creating, regifting or gifting things I have already that I know others would enjoy.
Having real convos with friends and loved ones about the state of things and also how we can move forward feeling more empowered.
Speaking to my son about things and parenting from a place of fairness and equality for all. Sticking to our parenting motto of ‘don’t raise a dick’.
Constantly reflecting on and creating for my business based on a more decolonised and healing model and mindset.
Donating to groups already doing really meaningful work around what I want to see more of.
Setting boundaries for myself around how much social media I consume, who I connect with and my purpose while I’m there. Building up a really lovely group of like minded folks through my newsletter and membership area instead of relying only on sosh meeds.
Choosing to support, source and buy from small businesses where I can.
Getting out into nature as much as possible so I stay connected to the cycles and rhythms of the real world and our interconnectedness to it all.
Writing to my government representatives
Voting most inline with my values which is the Green Party for now.
Working hard on my energetic, spiritual, mental and bodily hygiene and boundaries.
Some other suggestions and offerings have been:
Filling my social media feed with inspiring, diverse, creative, politically fair and active people.
Using our local library and the libby app
Speaking to our neighbours with a more open and generous spirit. Just speaking to people more openly as I go about my day in general. Most everyone is trying their best really.
We are trying to eat less meat in our week and we try to buy more local produce where we can. It’s not perfect but it has helped us financially and also it feels important.
Getting into gardening and really being in the seasons has helped me feel so much more connected to my life.
Strangely, saying no more! I have been running myself ragged and have felt so resentful over the years because I was doing way too much and didn’t know I can say no to so many of them. I feel like I have more space and time in my life to do more of what matters.
Letting myself be more of an artist again. That connection to my creative side helps me see things in a new and different way. I feel like I can come to better solutions through it.
Realising that my parenting style is a form of resistance and protest!
Slowing down, resting…coming away from the urgency culture. Trying to do more things offline.
Fully embracing my spiritual witchy side
Honestly…resting has been a game changer for me. I value my energy and health so much better and so I’m better placed to support in a more meaningful way.
One of my neighbours hasn’t been keeping too well so I have been doing their shopping for them. It’s been one of the most enriching things in my life and I get rewarded with tasty treats.
I joined my local litter pick group and once a week I go around our area grabbing litter. I enjoy it way more than I thought I would!
So many of us will be doing many of these things already. I hope you take heart in the fact that every little counts and helps. I hope those of you you’ve been needing a little inspiration find it here. I would love to make this a resource we can always come back to for ideas and inspiration so please add your things below!
